About Wakeboard Church

One day in a Saturday morning class in college I was day-dreaming and staring out the window. It was a beautiful spring morning, and even though I wasn’t very close to a body of water I knew that conditions would be perfect for riding. The class that I was in was called Discipleship 101 or something like that and we had a textbook called The Masterplan of Discipleship.

On the cover of this book was a small boat with 6 men in it. 5 of Jesus’ disciples and Jesus teaching them something amazing. You could tell because of the looks on their faces. This was back before towers and if you were a serious wakboarder then you had an extended pylon. Well the mast on this small sail boat looked an awful lot like an extended pylon and Jesus seemed to be putting his feet into a set of wakeboard bindings. Maybe it was just how my mind works…or maybe it was God telling me something more.

I knew that when I first gave my entire life to God I felt that he said, “Alf, I’m going to use who you are for my kingdom.” I know, I know that sounds a bit vague and profound, but it causes me to go back to the roots of it all. “Who am I?” I ask myself. A husband, a father, a friend…and most definitely a wakeboarder. It’s only fitting that we go out and ride, and then focus on God who ultimately allows us to do it in the first place.

If that isn’t enough: Jesus hung out in boats with his closest friends, taught them, got away from it all in the boat, caused miracles to happen in the boat, possibly changed the face of the world we know because of times spent with ordinary guys in a boat. That’s what I feel God wants to do with us through wakeboard church. Meet him, hang out with him, love him. Get away from the world if just for a little while and focus on the creator.

The plan is simple: Value relationships regardless of religious persuasion. Enjoy and experience the fellowship of being “fellow boarders”, and worship the creator of the amazing setting we ride in.

Matthew 14:32,33 – And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying. “Truly you are the Son of God.”
